I have often contemplated how our ancestors did without the benefit of someone to discuss their attitudes, emotions, and feelings with, such as we now have with counseling professionals such as Sally Miller. Her book Jersey Girl Fantasies gives us some insight into the fact that we aren’t really all that different from our contemporaries, nor from our ancestors, who consulted with fortunetellers, astrologers, and the prophets of ancient times.

I’m sure the question arose then as well as now, “Can I really trust this individual?” or “Of what benefit is discussing my innermost feelings with someone else?” Although I’ve never met her, I feel that Sally would be one that I could discuss things with that intrude upon my thoughts now and then, and she would tell me that many others have the same qualms and reservations. I also firmly believe that she would be the last to “put my business in the street” as it were, other than through the medium of a book like Jersey Girl Fantasies, which she has done without the mention of names, times, and places of her clients.

Her introduction sums up my struggle very well and would be of interest to those that find themselves in the same quandary. I quote her partially so you will have a better understanding of her approach.

Some of these fantasies you will enjoy; some may make you uncomfortable… [they were] designed to stretch your thinking, help you discover new ideas, new horizons for your real life experiences. Some are real experiences, others are wishful thinking, but all are real in that they have provided arousal for either the participants or the fantasizer, or both.…Fantasies, however, don’t rise out of a vacuum, and I must acknowledge the many facets and influences of my own sexual development -- professional sex therapist and counselor, and, of course, memories of childhood, plus everyday occurrences and observations.

Sally Miller’s advice as to how to utilize the experiences positioned me in a mien so I would appreciate them all the more, and I quote: “These are used to best advantage by getting into a relaxed state of mind and visualizing the scene after reading it, adding individualized details as desired.” In doing so I found that I could appreciate, relish, and savor the fantasy of an unknown fantasizer.

For example, the chapter called “The Big House” features a female visualizing herself being openly observed while she masturbates. In another, “Christine” sees herself as a cleaning lady that comes three times a week to clean the residence of a bachelor and how she finds the bed wet and what she does to help ???? him. “Crossways” describes a fantasy of a female that enlists the aid of her unknown companion in her masturbation to insert a finger in her anus. She is very specific in that he must put on “rubber gloves like a doctor does when he examines me.” “Hideaway” describes a location where the reader is asked to imagine a place “away from the hustle and bustle of your normal life, safe from discovery and interruption.”

The manner in which Sally uses a descriptive term for each chapter is unique and distinctive, e.g., Governess, Laundry Room, Long Weekend, Maid Service, On the Roof, Robot, Sodom, and The Scarf, giving each chapter a quality of its own. We find that fantasies are as varied and diverse as each human being has his or her own individual and personal characteristics.

Sally has that rare ability to use the words of the individual in whatever vernacular they choose, so the scenes described are as emotionally stirring and passionate to the reader as they are to the communicator.

After seven years of reading boring and monotonous textbook “case histories” and striving to comprehend psychobabble, it is refreshing to find someone who has reduced people’s ideas to comprehensibility so it doesn’t take a medical and psychiatric dictionary to determine what someone is trying to communicate to me and others.

Not only is this a very thought-provoking and exciting book to read, it will inspire you to explore your own sexual fantasies with a different level of understanding and appreciation. You are more than likely to find your own personal fantasies more credible and logical.
