It has been fun putting this catalog together, seeing our growth and change over the years. Synergy Book Service was conceived in1985 and has gone through many stages, but throughout that time we have striven to present information, opinion, and erotica in a straightforward, simple way.

It has been over ten years since we moved to larger quarters out in the country, where I spent some time healing from major surgery and focused on finishing The ABCs of Living Without Cancer Part 1. Copies are available, complete with recipes, food charts, resource lists, and the story of my journey with natural healing. During that time I also finished Good Eats at Sally's: Recipes for Health, a cookbook for people who want to change their diet but don't know where to begin. Both books have gotten nice reviews.

The summer of 2009 we published a second cookbook: larger (210 pages), set out by seasons, and full of interesting food. More information is available at Sally's in the Kitchen.

In the fall of 2009 a collection of my essays came out. The Truth According to Sally Miller has two main parts. The first, called Health & Wellness, contains essays on psychological, spiritual, and physical health and well-being, 30 in all. Early in 2010 we published the last of Mykola Dementiuk’s books under contract, 100 Whores. This is in his characteristic style — literary, sexy, and thought provoking. The first chapter, “100 Whores,” contains 100 short vignettes of excursions with whores, mostly New York City street hookers. The next 5 chapters are each an individual short story. The last chapter, “Christmas Whore” is a novelette in itself, and takes place in and near the Belmore Cafeteria in Manhattan, a staple of the City that Never Sleeps in the late 1960’s.  Nowhere else can you read this voice of degradation, squalor, and to me at least, sadness.

SALLY'S IN THE KITCHEN:

Sally's in the Kitchen takes us through a year of recipes (including a bonus "Fifth Season") and encourages the use of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Also included are a variety of sweet treats, ways to utilize the freezer for cook-ahead meals, and some of Sally's childhood memories growing up.

Raised in Iowa where both corn and hogs grow abundantly, Sally switched from her previous diet, high in meat and dairy products, to a more plant-based diet as an alternative to using chemotherapy or radiation for her ovarian cancer treatment thirteen years ago. Joining the Central Jersey Vegetarian Group a year later, she became co-chair of the Restaurant Group, which visited New Jersey restaurants of diverse nature and inspired her personal cooking habits. These she shared through her wellness retreat just south of Flemington with cooking classes and retreats during the early 2000's.

The 210-page 8 1/2" x 11" spiral-bound cookbook will entice the reader to think about food in a new way. The book is divided up into seasons, starting with summer, when the local produce begins to appear in abundance. FANTASIES OF THE FUTURE

Though the primary focus of HOLY COMMUNION is sin, guilt, atonement, and redemption, there is also a subtext which explores the boy's growing awareness of sexuality. We see his faltering attempts at reconciling these urgings and his longings for acceptance with his inherent suspicion of love and contact.

The boy moves through the four days in a state of befuddled uncertainty and ignorance, swept up in the promise of his religious instruction, yet tormented by memories and the contradictory behavior of the adults around him: he is belittled for his chronic bed-wetting; is witness to the rape of his godmother; is battered by his nun teacher, is manipulated into sexual participation (with adults and other children); is faced with his loving mother's absence and eventual death.

In the end, burdened with self-accusations and guilt over what he feels is unforgivable sin and deceit, the boy dares to partake of the communion ceremony and risk the punishment of death he has been led to believe is his due.

HOLY COMMUNION is an exploration of a boy's need to understand and accept the consequences of his thoughts and actions as sin while he struggles to challenge and renounce the authority of that judgment against him. It is this groping through confusion and outrage that he comes to understand the cetainty of his innocence and child-humanity, and achieve the "holy communion" of sex and rejection, struggle and survival, loss and hope.

Selected Tales is a collection of seven short stories. Lust, love, fear, humor, tenderness, passion, and pain are all part of Selected Tales. Each story reveals Mykola's sharp eye for detail and his great insight into the human condition. His love for words is obvious throughout.

If we had to pick our favorite, it would be "The Electric Guy," which gets into the head of an imaginative man working at an all-girls high school. It's hilarious, especially when read out loud.

"Kiss Me" shows so perfectly both sides of a teenage boy/girl encounter (could it enlighten even grown-ups?).

"Cosmo Girl" gives us a wonderful peek into a young woman's view of modern marriage and femininity, and "Drama of a Gifted Child" will surely warm your heart as it did ours.

"Her Kid Sister," a story of lust and satisfaction, is Mykola's favorite, and "Dead Joey" reminds us of lessons learned in childhood.

The last story in the book, "Without You I'm Nothing," is somewhat melancholy, but it so accurately portrays the depression that can come with life change.

None of these stories have the hard edge that other of Mykola's writings have, but they will make you laugh, and perhaps cry. Certainly they will make you think.

BABY DOLL by Mykola Dementiuk

Mykola Dementiuk has again brought us an unusual story of a youth growing up in New York City. Skipping school as a daily routine, the main character of Baby Doll finds himself spending time at the East River Park, looking for girls. Instead he finds a pair of pink underwear which take him on an adventure that shapes his future.

Baby Doll gives us a literary look at the complicated psychodynamics of love and sex between a boy and a man in America in the early ‘80s (the beginning era of AIDS, sex-offender witch-hunts, and gay/transvestite visibility). Like a good movie, Baby Doll is definitely worth giving a second (or third) read. Mykola’s mastery at storytelling and excellent writing will keep you engaged the first time through, but subsequent readings will help you understand the complex forces that unfold between the characters. You may question his opinions on femininity and relationships, but you won’t be able to ignore Mykola’s love for words as well as his understanding of a boy’s feelings and behavior.

Sexual counselor Sally Miller provides some insight into the story in the afterword.

Baby Doll is the second in a series of chapbooks by Mykola Dementiuk to be published by Synergy Press in 2006. Look for the next one, a collection of short stories, just in time for summer reading!
